I really need to start a ‘Scandinavian influence’ section. In the 1960s and 1970s Britain’s ceramics and glass industry had not caught up with the swinging 6Os zeitgeist. Much of the designs produced were stuck in a British colonial style - of countryside vistas and Victorian filigrees and twirls.
This beautiful vase is an example of producers trying to create a modern look for an already ailing industry in the UK. Bold patterns influenced by the likes of Mary Quant, and Scandinavian style.
Sadly it came too late, and the ceramics industry never really recovered in the UK from its heyday pre 1960s. British ceramics are reborn in the 21st century by designer makers and it is a now a vibrant, exciting craft again.
