I personally love the colour which is influenced by atonal aesthetic introduced in the 1960s and 70s. Beautiful grey / blue
The design is attributed to Aimo Okkolin, who was one of the first designers to work for Riihimaen. He was also the most sculptural of the glass companies designers.
He designed a wide range of intricate work in crystal for Riihimani, but it is these pared back sculptural forms he designed in the 1960s and early 70s, which resonate the most with me.
Encased glass is used to reduce the vase to its minimal shape. The curves are almost aerodynamic in their outline. This particular vase made in the 1970s by Riihimaen Lasi, pattern number 1479 reminds me of the sculptures of Brancusi, particularly his sculpture Endless Column which symbolises the concept of infinity: if you imagine this vase stood end to end, it mimics Brancusi’s piece . If you look at the body of work by Okkolin there is little doubt he was influenced by the Romanian sculptor.
