When Kaj Franck first designed the Kartio carafe for Iittala, it was emblematic of modernism’s search for pure form and function. The design went on to win many design awards.
The design is... wait for it... a classic. I hate the cliche but it is as classic as a Aston Martin sports car in racing green, designed in England at the same time, or a Givenchy designed dress, from Paris.
Fanck believed in uncomplicated design, with attractive, simple outlines. This carafe / cocktail shaker is a classic representation of modernist principles of form and function.
The ‘waisted’ shape, provides a natural cleft from which to pick the object up from - thus dispensing with a handle.
And, it also allowed the vase to take up less storage space when not in use.
A beautiful design, in a somber - if not sober - moss green.
