Japanese glass making in the 1960s and 70s introduced vibrant colours, which seem to encase the light within its texture.
Japan, like Scandinavia, has a long history in glass making, and stylisation according to area it was produced, and glass manufacturer.
The Midcentury sees an expansion in exports from Japan to Europe.
There was an obvious synthesis between Scandinavian modern style, and the new glass making from Japan. Both calling upon nature, and organic form.
Many Scandinavian designers - like Tapio Wirkkala - spent time working in Japan. It is an artistic, aesthetic exchange which continues today with companies like Iitalla.
