Vintage Aarikka wooden statue "Madonna" also known as "Maria" from "Jouluyö", by Aarikka Finland. Produced in the mid 1980s
This is a beautiful modernist piece Designed by Kaija Aarikka, who founded her company under her own name in 1954.
I love how she has stripped down the figure to its key components, like the English sculptor Henry Moore’s own Madonna and child, it is a sculpture about the connection between mother and child.
It is a serene piece, 34cm high, it is mediative in a often chaotic world. Hand made in Finland it epitomises Scandinavian design, and modernist aesthetics.
The base has some scorching which might be from the original hand made process, or a over zealous use of candles in a past nativity scene. But it is undamaged and part of the patina.
