Facilities”, “New and Reconditioned” and “Guaranteed After Sales Service”. The lens is prominently marked Leitz Germany, while the camera body advertises the German manufacture of Leica equipment.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIntriguingly, the reverse of the ceramic itself is transfer-marked “Made in England”, suggesting that the object was produced for the British photographic trade rather than manufactured by Leitz in Germany.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe precise maker and original retailer have not yet been identified. We have been unable to locate another identical example, and therefore make no claim that it was manufactured or officially commissioned by Ernst Leitz. Its construction, typography and wonderfully period reference to “H.P. Facilities” are consistent with mid-century British point-of-sale advertising.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt survives in very good vintage condition, with minor signs of age and previous use.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhy it works\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePart advertising object, part sculpture and part history of the high street, this is precisely the sort of commercial object that rarely survives once its original purpose has disappeared.
