Alfred Meakin 'Samoa' 1970s Coffee set of 5 settings. Cup and Saucer, with side plate.

Wonderful illustrations in black outline, hand applied, before grazing. Heavily influenced by the technique developed by Esteri Tomula, at Arabia in the 1950s, and 60s. Like her Krokus design.

The illustrations depict the fauna of hedgerows, and I think the ‘Samoa’ connection is questionable - probably chosen for its exotic quality. As the British increasingly took their holidays abroad, and watched travel programmes on the television.

The design is influenced by the post Festival of Britain era in UK design. The ‘studio’ design of the ceramics was used as basis for much of the 1960s products produced by Meakin’s during this period.

The festival had introduced European, and especially Scandinavian design to consumers and designers. Tom Arnold is an important designer of the period, and he commissioned many Interesting designers and illustrators of the time - including Margaret Simpson, and Enid Seeney.

The motif used on this design is likely to be by one of these two prolific designers. It is a serious piece of modernist illustration. Dramatic.

The condition is vintage but unused.
