An unusually elegant British teak tallboy dating from the late 1960s or early 1970s. Although no maker’s mark survives, its appearance sits close to the Scandinavian-influenced bedroom furniture produced by Uniflex and other progressive British manufacturers of the period. It is offered without a firm attribution.

The design is defined by its tall, compact proportions and distinctive continuous end-frames, which curve gently at floor level to create an almost sled-like underframe. Five practical drawers are set behind warm teak-veneered fronts, each fitted with a recessed, sculpted handle. A dark shadow line beneath the top and the open framework below give the otherwise simple cabinet a particularly architectural quality.

The original finish has been gently cleaned and revived in our studio workshop. Minor marks and signs of previous use remain, consistent with its age, but the tallboy presents very well overall.

Why it works

Its narrow footprint provides useful storage without dominating a room. The restrained drawer fronts allow the unusual underframe to become the principal decorative element—a good example of British manufacturers adapting Scandinavian modernism for the post-war home.
