Designed by Ann Wärff for Kosta Boda, the Snowball votive has become one of the most recognisable pieces of late twentieth-century Scandinavian glass.
The design is defined by its irregular crystalline surface, recalling packed snow or ice shaped by nature. When illuminated, the heavy lead crystal scatters and softens the candlelight, creating a warm glow that contrasts beautifully with the rugged exterior texture.
Handcrafted in Sweden during the late 1970s and early 1980s, each example displays subtle variations created during the glassmaking process.
Despite its compact size, the substantial crystal gives the piece a reassuring weight and presence, allowing it to work equally well as a candleholder or as a small sculptural object.
A personal favourite of mine — a quietly iconic example of late twentieth-century Scandinavian glass design.
