The F-Range, a design attibuted to Gunther Hoffstead, produced for Uniflex (L. Lazarus & Sons) in the mid-1960s, was a radical departure from traditional British furniture.
A dressing table from the Uniflex “F Range”, accompanied by its original period advert — a design conceived as part of a coordinated interior rather than a standalone piece.
The design is defined by its clarity of form: a horizontal teak surface set against a solid end panel and a bank of drawers, their pale fronts offsetting the warmth of the timber. The composition is simple, but precise — each element held in balance.
Seen alongside the original Uniflex advert, the piece takes on a different significance. It was designed to sit within a wider system — dressing table, seating, and stool — each part sharing a common language of proportion and detail.
That sense of system is what gives the piece its quiet authority. The flat planes, the measured use of contrast, the absence of unnecessary ornament — all point towards a way of thinking about interiors as composed environments.
In the studio workshop, the piece has been gently conserved — not stripped. The teak has been carefully revived to restore depth to the grain while retaining the surface variation that comes with use. The drawer fronts remain softly toned, providing a subtle counterpoint to the timber
Why it works
This is a piece that sits comfortably between utility and composition. It functions as a dressing table or compact desk, but its strength lies in its restraint — a clarity of design that allows it to integrate easily while still holding presence.
