Pair of Vintage East German Ladderback Dining Chairs available in blue or pink Linwood upholstery

These two dining chairs carry a quiet history: on the underside sits the original paper label from VEB VSI Neuhasen, Werk Brand-Erbisdorf, GDR – identifying them as Model BE 18, with the original 69% viscose / wool upholstery. Chairs of this type were produced in the former East Germany for domestic use and export, often in small batches, and rarely retain their labels.

The frames are made from a warm, almond-toned hardwood with a scent and grain close to cedar. We conserved the wood rather than stripping it – renewing it micro-layer by micro-layer, keeping the gentle patina and marks that tell of decades of use. The result is a natural satin sheen that suits the ladder-back design beautifully.

The seats have been professionally reupholstered using Linwood woven fabric, offered in two colourways:
• Blue-grey – subtle and quiet, with a Scandinavian feel
• Heather pink – a soft mauve tone that brings warmth and lift to the wood

The pattern of the weave echoes the original textile but offers far greater durability. Both fabrics are high-quality upholstery grade.
