Wonderful, rare, oil painting by Scottish artist G.R. Cattermole. The image became a collectible postcard in the 1960s 70s. The style is modernist with the abstract feel of Charles Sheeler’s paintings of American industry. it has the same tonal qualities. in simple wooden frame.

This painting presents a compelling portrayal of the MS Viking I, a once-storied roll-on/roll-off (RORO) ferry that traversed the English Channel. Rendered by the esteemed Scottish artist G.R. Cattermole, the image transcends its collectible nature to become a valuable historical artifact.

Originally commissioned by Otto Thoresen of Thoresen Ferries for service between Southampton and Cherbourg, the Viking I played a significant role in cross-Channel transportation. While the physical ship was decommissioned in 2008,this postcard ensures the vessel's legacy endures. Cattermole's masterful depiction offers a permanent memento of the Viking I's grandeur, inviting the viewer to appreciate its historic significance.
