A lovely, quietly elegant mid-century bureau with simple, well-judged lines that reflect the Scandinavian influence on British furniture design in the post-war decades.
Produced in the 1970s by Remploy, a company with an important social history. Remploy was established to provide skilled employment for disabled workers, and their furniture is notable for its solid construction, restraint of form, and honest materials rather than overt styling.
The teak is particularly attractive, with expressive grain throughout — most striking on the fall-front desk door, where the figuring reads almost like a landscape.
This piece has been gently conserved rather than stripped. The original bright 1970s varnish has been carefully curtailed and softened, leaving a more tactile, natural finish that allows the character of the teak to come through, while still protecting the surface for everyday use. Signs of age remain where appropriate, preserving the bureau’s history without compromising its presence.
A practical and well-scaled piece, suitable for use as a compact writing desk, hallway bureau, or bedroom workstation.
