Vintage Mid-Century Teak Magazine Rack

By John Watts, England | c. late 1950s–early 1960s

A quietly confident piece of British mid-century design, this teak magazine rack was produced by John Watts of Sheffield during the post-war period when British furniture was beginning to absorb Scandinavian ideas of lightness, flexibility and material honesty.

Formed from teak-veneered plywood, the rack features gently curved end panels, softened edges, and an integrated hand-hold cut-out, giving it a balanced, functional presence. The design is restrained rather than showy — practical, well proportioned, and very much intended for everyday use in the modern home.

Pieces like this were designed to sit easily alongside sofas and armchairs, holding magazines, newspapers or records at a time when printed matter was central to domestic life. It reflects a moment when British manufacturers embraced modern materials and methods while retaining a sense of durability and craft.

The original John Watts paper label remains intact, a nice detail that grounds the piece firmly in its period.

Condition
Very good vintage condition. The teak has been gently cleaned and refreshed, retaining a warm, even tone with light signs of age consistent with use. Structurally sound and ready to use.

Why it works
Not a designer-named object, but an excellent example of British modern domestic design — modest, useful, and thoughtfully made. It pairs effortlessly with G-Plan, Ercol, and Scandinavian mid-century interiors without competing for attention.
