Mid-Century British Modernist Teak Storage Cabinet attribututed Henry Stone & Son of Banbury

What first appears to be a simple cabinet reveals an exceptional level of craftsmanship on closer inspection. The recessed side panels create subtle shadow lines that mirror the central door gap, while the housed underframe and finely joined orthogonal legs demonstrate the quality of its construction. The doors close with a quiet, well-fitted weight rarely found on more utilitarian pieces of the period. Every detail has been resolved with care, from the gently projecting top to the carefully selected teak veneers.

This cabinet was acquired directly from the family of a cabinet maker who spent his entire working life at Henry Stone & Son of Banbury, from apprentice through to retirement. According to the seller, the cabinet “remained in the family kitchen throughout his childhood” before eventually passing out of the family. Although no maker’s label survives, the provenance, quality of construction and design language place it firmly within the tradition of post-war British modernist furniture. Research into the company’s surviving archives is ongoing.

The cabinet has been sympathetically conserved in our studio workshop. The original finish has been gently cleaned and revived using traditional wax oil, preserving the character and patina accumulated over decades of everyday use. It has not been stripped or refinished — original surfaces like this are increasingly rare, and once removed, can never be replaced. Retaining them keeps the piece honest to its age, and closer to what collectors will one day recognise as authentic.

Behind the pair of doors is a practical storage compartment with its original adjustable shelf, making it equally suited to use as a drinks cabinet, hallway cupboard, media cabinet or compact sideboard.

Why it works

The design is defined by proportion rather than decoration. Subtle shadow lines, crisp joinery and an elegantly engineered underframe give the cabinet an architectural clarity that rewards close inspection. It is a restrained, self-assured example of British modernism from a period when craftsmanship remained central to furniture making.
