A well-proportioned British modernist chest of drawers dating from the 1950s. Although no maker’s mark is present, the materials and construction indicate a notably well-made piece. Attributed to Peter Hayward for Uniflex, probably from the M Range, circa 1958–60
The design is defined by two broad drawer fronts. The figured sapele veneer changes with the light, between warm amber and deeper reddish-brown tones. Slim, patinated metal handles provide a lovely modernist detail. Together, these elements give the piece a solid architectural stance.
The substantial timber drawers are traditionally dovetailed, with grooved bottoms and slotted screws rather than pins.
Carefully cleaned and lightly conserved in our studio workshop, retaining the warmth, patina and minor marks acquired through use.
Why it works
Compact but capacious, its ornament comes from the natural movement of the veneer and the quality of its construction: proportion rather than decoration.
