A low coffee table from the Gambit range, designed by George Fejér for Guy Rogers Ltd, a British manufacturer of contemporary furniture whose Manhattan range was retailed through Heal’s.

Fejér was a Hungarian-born architect and product designer who came to Britain in 1938. He is best known for pioneering the fitted kitchen in the UK, and his work is represented in the V&A collection. Gambit was conceived as a modular range built on a 24-inch module, with afromosia frames.

The frame is solid afromosia, an oily, fine-grained hardwood that darkens with age to a deep chocolate brown. The square-section legs rise proud of the rails at each corner to carry the top. The original speckled black laminate top matches the frame in age, and the design corresponds to the table shown in the period Gambit brochure. At 24 inches wide and 12 inches high, its proportions follow the 24-inch module described in the Gambit brochure.

Condition: Good vintage condition with honest age-related wear. The laminate shows minimal marks consistent with use. The frame has a warm, even patina with minor knocks to the edges. The wooden frame has been recoiled allowing the original patina to be maintained

Dimensions: L 116.5 x W 61 x H 30.5 cm
