The F-Range, a design attibuted to Gunther Hoffstead, produced for Uniflex (L. Lazarus & Sons) in the mid-1960s, was a radical departure from traditional British furniture.
A rare stool from the Uniflex “F Range”, accompanied by its original period advert — a design that sits within a coordinated system of dressing table, seating and occasional pieces.
The design is defined by its architectural side panels: flat planes of teak punctuated by a precise circular cut-out. This single gesture transforms what could be a simple stool into something far more considered — a piece that plays with mass and void in a way closely aligned with Scandinavian modernist thinking of the period.
The original Uniflex advert (included) situates the stool within the wider “F Range”, where it functions not as an isolated object but as part of a coherent interior scheme — dressing table, seating and stool working together as a unified design language.
In the studio workshop the piece has been gently conserved. The teak retains its warmth and natural variation, with only a light revival to bring back depth to the grain. The upholstered seat has been refreshed in a muted grey-blue fabric — intentionally restrained, allowing the timber form to remain the focus.

Why it works
What makes this piece compelling is its balance between utility and form. It is a practical object — a stool, a perch, a footrest — but it carries a clarity of design more often associated with larger furniture. The circular cut-out is not decorative; it is structural, visual, and spatial all at once.
