A wonderfully constructed modernist table made in the 1950, by the The Airscrew Company & Jicwood Ltd and Weyroc. The company were the main producers for wooden propellers in the UK from the 1930s into the Midcentury.

By the late 1950’s they were diversifying their products, Jicwood converted its manufacturing capacity to laminated stressed-skin panels. Bonded by a synthetic resin, expanded polymer or compressed sawdust core, the laminated sandwiched sheets could be formed and pressed into a diversity of shapes and lengths.

The company led in the developments in the first production of ‘chipboard’, and WEYROC enjoyed a name second to none in the UK construction. The company were taken into Scandinavian ownership in the late 1950s.

The table was produced at the same time as the company, in partnership with the architect Richard Sheppard, produced a modernist design archetype for postwar housing: The Jicwood bungalow.

This a beautiful piece of British modernist design history. The Formica pattern remains extremely contemporary looking.
