A striking pair of Modernist armchairs dating from the late 1960s or early 1970s. In the sculptural modernist idiom, construction and metric proportions consistent with Central European manufacture, probably Czechoslovak, c.1960s
Although the maker remains unidentified, the chairs display a confident architectural approach to their design, with slender faceted armrests, gently tapering frames and beautifully balanced proportions that reflect the influence of Scandinavian modernism on British furniture of the period.
The chairs retain what appears to be their original olive-gold velvet upholstery, which has been carefully cleaned and presents remarkably well. The original upholstery complements the warm timber frames and preserves the character of the period.
Constructed using traditional hardwood frames with sprung seats, the chairs are solid, comfortable and exceptionally well made. Their restrained detailing allows the quality of the design and craftsmanship to speak for itself.
Each chair has been sympathetically cleaned and lightly conserved in our studio workshop. The original finish has been refreshed while retaining the gentle patina and signs of age expected from over half a century of careful use.
Why it works
These chairs capture a moment when furniture makers were embracing the clarity and restraint of Scandinavian design. Rather than relying on ornament, the design is defined by clean geometry, carefully resolved proportions and honest construction. They work equally well as dining carvers, desk chairs or occasional seating within a contemporary interior.
Condition
Very good vintage condition. The frames are structurally sound and the original upholstery has been professionally cleaned. Minor age-related marks to the timber remain, consistent with careful use and sympathetic conservation.
