Designed by Jasper Morrison for Vitra in 1999, the SIM chair is a thoughtful reappraisal of the modern stacking chair. Rather than pursuing novelty, Morrison refined an established furniture type into one that is lighter, more comfortable and visually quieter. These early examples were manufactured in week 34 of 2004 and retain their original Vitra production labels.
Produced with a two-piece moulded polypropylene seat and back supported by a slender chromed steel frame, the SIM chair embodies Morrison’s belief that good design should quietly become part of everyday life. Its restrained form, comfortable flexibility and careful proportions have ensured that it remains as relevant today as when it was first introduced.
These chairs have been carefully cleaned and conserved in our studio workshop, preserving their original character while presenting exceptionally well over twenty years after manufacture.
Why it works
The design is defined by clarity rather than ornament. Every curve, junction and material has been carefully resolved until nothing feels unnecessary. Morrison’s work is often associated with the philosophy of ‘Super Normal’—objects that improve everyday life through usefulness rather than novelty.
As Morrison himself observed while reflecting on the chair’s development, successful designs often build upon the achievements of their predecessors rather than seeking originality for its own sake. The SIM is an elegant example of that approach: familiar, understated and enduring.
Condition
Presented in exceptionally well-preserved original condition, with only minimal signs of previous use. Carefully cleaned and conserved in our studio workshop.
Original Vitra production labels remain in place, confirming manufacture in week 34 of 2004.
