A slim, glazed bookcase from Herbert E. Gibbs's Autographed Furniture range, with the maker's signed plaque still fixed to the back.
At only 24cm deep, it fits where most bookcases won't: hallways, alcoves, narrow walls and small flats.
Sliding glass doors run above solid timber sliders in a figured veneer, all set on a slim plinth.
The original brass-plated pulls on the wooden doors are heavily patinated and perfectly made, like small Georg Jensen sculptures. It's a lovely detail. It's a lovely detail. Two adjustable shelves inside hold books, glass and ceramics, and an open compartment at the right suits records, a lamp or a favourite object.
Dimensions: W 152 × D 24 × H 83cm
Maker: Herbert E. Gibbs, Hertfordshire, "Autographed Furniture" range, numbered plaque 4905 916, c. 1960s

Design is the art history that gets to be lived in.
